As president of the Nursing Science Society, I act as a liaison between nursing students and faculty, other Queen’s faculties and the Kingston Community. Some of my duties include running meetings, attending meetings across campus, attending and reporting to the AMS and sitting on various committees as a nursing student representative. The NSS functions to bring together our faculty and others around campus. We participate in various volunteer capacities as well as do fundraising for local and national charities. We also organize a lot of fun social events to bring our student body together. The NSS is a great way to get to know other nursing students, as well as learn leadership & communication skills and it is a great opportunity to become active in your educational experience.
Vice president is a very exciting and challenging position. It enables you to work with members of
not only the NSS, but the nursing and health science faculty as well as many members of other faculty boards. In this position I have had the pleasure to work on numerous initiatives and have been a part of many important decisions. This position allows for a very hands on approach for incoming students as it involves assisting with the organization of Frosh Week and planning Big Buddy Events throughout the year. VP allows you to get a real feel for the society as you sit on many committees that organize things from the March Break Open House to organizing the nominations for Class Council and NSS Executive positions. It is a great position that has allowed me to work with some very remarkable individuals in the Queens community! If you have any questions please feel free to email me!
As the NSS Senator I serve two very distinct roles for the Faculty society. First I am an Executive member of the NSS and I am the guardian of the NSS constitution. I am responsible for making sure that proceeding that occur within the meeting of the NSS are not in conflict with our constitution. Also I put into effect any changes to the constitution that the NSS agrees upon. My secondary role is that of a Student Senator on the Queen’s University Senate, which is a committee chaired by our beloved principle. As a student senator I am your voice in concerns and changes that effect the entire campus. This position offers a student a chance to be both part of their student government, while also being part of Queen’s governance and the possibility of serving on other senate sub committees.
As the Internal Affairs Coordinator, I organize and document all NSS meetings, regulate mass emails sent by the NSS to the School of Nursing students and approve poster material for content and appropriateness. I am also responsible for the maintenance of the NSS website.
4th year AST(Advanced Standing Track) representative represents a group of 16 bright nursing students in a two-year fast track program. My major role is to ensure that there is a good communication between the AST students and NSS by keeping both groups updated on important issues pertaining to the ASTs.
As the Academic and Careers Coordinator, I am responsible for organizing the annual Nursing Career Fair held in October. I also act as a liaison between the Nursing student body, the faculty and hospital agencies/organizations. I provide helpful information to students regarding summer employment opportunities for current students and post-graduation opportunities for fourth year students, and provide additional information about upcoming career fairs in the local area. As the Academic and Careers Coordinator, I also chair the Awards Committee and attend all Academic Council Meetings.
I network with other Queens University social issues groups including the social issues commission of the AMS to formulate collective knowledge concerning present social issues to be relayed out to the Nursing Students. I also organize and promote social issues events that will bring awareness. Finally I act as a liaison between NSS and QHSSA(Queens Health Sciences Students Association).
